Certified Organic Milk
Our small herd of 36 Jersey cows is rotationally grazed on 60 acres of pasture in the summer time and fed stored hay and a small amount of grain in the winter. No hormones, antibiotics or non-organic feed of any kind is used. The cows spend day and night on fresh grass in the spring, summer, and fall and are housed in a red dairy barn with individual waterbeds in the winter. The cows produce about 100 gallons of clean, fresh milk every day of the year. Baby calves are raised in a sunny hoophouse nursery adjacent to the dairy barn.
Our cows are rotationally grazed on 70 acres, a practice we find preferable to those common in the concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) that now dot the American landscape. Though pastured cows yield less milk than their grain-fed counterparts, they are healthier, easier on the environment, and provide a vastly superior product. Because our cows enjoy a natural grass-based diet, their milk is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin E, as well as conjugated linoleic acids and omega-3 fatty acids (both considered powerful anti-carcinogens).
On top of that, consider that we keep mostly Jersey cows, a small breed that produces a sweet, rich milk with 18% more protein, 20% more calcium, and 25% more butterfat than your average milk.
That may be a lot to swallow all at once. But even if all that nutritional talk doesn’t interest you, here is the bottom line: Real milk tastes better. Plain and simple.
Our milk is distributed by Westby Co-Op Creamery. You can find Westby cheese and butter products at your local coop or grocery store – go pick some up!
